Farm Crew

This position is being updated for 2017, but it will be similar to the below description:

For an in depth description of jobs at Red Wagon Farm please read our Basic Job Description before applying.

We are looking for people who have some farming or other outdoor work experience to work on our farm crew. You will have the opportunity to work in the fields and in the wash station to gain a lot of new skills, and to work with and learn from some very skilled members of our crew.

The farm crew is mainly responsible for harvesting in the field and processing vegetables in the wash station. You will also be responsible for weeding and planting (at the beginning of the season). Most of our employees are members of our farm crew and some with more experience or ability take on additional responsibilities.

The farm crew is responsible for harvesting, usually daily, to fulfill commitments to CSA, restaurants, and the Boulder farmers’ market. As a member of a harvest team you will work with your crew leader and the rest of your harvest group to efficiently harvest all the items on the crew leader’s list.

We have very high quality standards at Red Wagon Farm and we expect crew members to follow all of our procedures to ensure the highest quality. This can be an overwhelming amount of detail for some people. But you will learn a tremendous amount if you are willing to work with our team to achieve our goals.

In the mid- to late-summer, you will spend the early part of the day harvesting. Then you will go to the wash station to process the vegetables harvested that day. The work in the wash station can be repetitive, but it can also be a nice break from being in the hot sun.

You must be able to work efficiently at everything you do. We have a tremendous amount of work to accomplish every day. We need our whole team to be focused and constantly working on ways to improve everything we do.

One of the most important things in a farm crew member is a great attitude! This can be a hectic and stressful job. But it is a lot of fun when we have positive people with good attitudes. One person with a negative attitude can bring the whole rest of the crew down. You need to be able to roll with the ever-changing conditions of working on our farm. You also need to be able to resolve conflict and avoid creating conflict yourself.

You must be willing to do any job that is required at the farm. You will do lots of work in the fields. But you will also do things like empty trash and wash coolers. We all need to pitch in everywhere to get the job done.

Finally, members of the farm crew have the opportunity to work at some of our various distribution outlets. These include:

  • CSA pickups. These are held three evenings each week, May through October, under the direction of the CSA Manager.
  • Boulder Farmers’ Market. We would like all new employees to be available to work at least one Saturday market every month so we can ensure adequate staffing.
